Christmas and Commercialization

I realize that there is a general belief that Christmas has become terribly over-commercialized. It’s hard not to notice at this time of the year. But is this the answer? Fighting commercialization with, well, more commercialization?

The link is to a website offering Baby Jesus dolls. Yeah, that’s the way to fight the commercialization of Christmas — commercialize the idea of Jesus’s birth.

And to top it off, the Baby Jesus doll seems like not particularly well done commercialization. It is offered in several races, presumably to appeal to the most potential consumers; however, as the Chicken Mafia astutely notes, the African-American baby Jesus is the same image as the Hispanic baby Jesus. (Is that politically correct marketing? “We think Blacks are identical to Hispanics!”). And there is no Middle Eastern baby Jesus offered at all — which would be fine, except that Jesus was born in Bethlehem to a Jewish family. Oops.

  1. I like egg nog, Handel’s Messiah, the mo tab singing carols, baby jesus (the baby himself, not the doll), and new basketball shoes from my mom. But in general I don’t like Christmas much; it goes well beyond just commercialization.
