The End of the Primary Supplements

Well, our househunting has turned into a soap opera but as it is looking highly unlikely that we’ll stay in our ward, I have asked to be released and I am announcing the end of the Primary supplements. Here are the resources that I usually use to prepare them:

(1) I search The Friend using keywords from the scripture passage. I can usually find board games, crafts, and ideas from old Sharing Times. Don’t be afraid to adapt things or use them for other purposes than originally intended: flannel board figures can be puzzles or puppets or hidden around the room with questions on the back, etc.

(2) I then use this website, which is not an LDS site so you’ll definitely need to use your discretion as to what is appropriate for your classroom. Of all of the sites that they link to, I find NAD Kindergarten/Primary to be the most useful and Mission Arlington to be the next most useful.

Anyway: wish us luck as we try to decide between the four houses on our short list: The MoneyPit, Slightly OverPriced, Microscopic Kitchen but Next Door to Park, and No Soul But Great Potential.

  1. I have really appreciated all the time and effort you must have put into this. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us.

  2. Thanks for all of the kind words.

Michelle, I honestly have to say that I did not enjoy my year in Primary very much. Several reasons: previous calling was teaching Gospel Doctrine, which I loved and was hard to leave. Also: I think many of the confines and expectations (some formal, some cultural) create a situation where Primary is much less effective (and fun!) than it could otherwise be. I also don’t play well with others, and therefore prefer a teaching calling to being in a presidency. :)

  3. My faith in the restoration of the gospel has been greatly strengthend by RSR. (It was strong before this reading). This wonderful book has answered many questions that I had not found in a lifetime of teaching (and attending) Susnday School and Priesthood lessons. Thanks for your great research.

  4. Thanks for your work. I’ll miss your supplements too. Actually, with an impending move to a small compound in Saudi Arabia, the thought has crossed my mind that I may be doing home-primarying. I was planning on happily using your supplements (lazy girl that I am!).

Have a great house hunt. They all sound like interesting choices.

  5. Hi meems, I’ll be spending a lot of time in Saudi over the next year and would like to make contact with other Mormons who might be there. If you don’t mind, would you please email me at dorq.chaklit at gmail dot com? Thanks!

  6. Thank you, Julie, for sharing your hunting-and-gathering-and-organizing skilz with us. I will miss these supplements; I have used them both in primary (as a sub) and at home in FHE.

Good luck on the house hunting–I know whichever one you choose will quickly become your home. D’ya think you’ll do red walls again (I love ’em)?

  7. You know, at least in Austin, everyone and her sister has a red room and I don’t want to do it again because it seems . . . almost required. I have been thinking about paint colors a lot, however. I’m stuck with my khaki couches but I was thinking maybe denim blue walls and accents? Any ideas for me?

  8. It’s fun to do Primary at home, meems. But I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few other members nearby with at least a few Primary kids. Mormons flock to Saudi for some reason.

  9. Just want to wish you luck with the house-hunting–how well I recall that dreadful hell. And sorry about having to relinquish primary. Primary callings are the most fun, I think–especially chorister.

  10. Julie,
You’re supplements have been SO helpful to me – sad to hear (read) you’ll be away from Primary. But I can totally relate to your preference of teaching over leadership callings. You seem to have a unique talent for creatively teaching children the Gospel – something I admire. I know you’ll be an asset to whichever ward you end up in. Oh, and I vote for No Soul But Great Potential – because I think you and your family will give ANY house its “soul.”
Best of luck in the whole home-buying and moving process.
